Your Guide to British Way of Life

Acceptable Behaviour in England

The English are said to be reserved in manners, dress and speech. They are famous for their politeness, self-discipline and especially for their sense of humor. Basic politeness (please, thank you, excuse me) is expected.

How to greet someone:

English people are quite reserved when greeting one another. A greeting can be a bright ´Hello´, ´Hi´, or ´Good morning´, when you arrive at work or at school.

Terms of Endearment:

You may be caller by many different "affectionate" names, according to which part of the England you are visiting. Do not be offended, this is quite normal. For example, you may be called dear, dearie, flower, love, chick, chuck, me duck, me duckie, mate, guv, son, ma´am, madam, miss, sir, or treacle, according to your sex, age and location.

Interesting Fact
The "affectionate" name 'duck' is thought to come from the Anglo-Saxon word 'ducis' which was meant as a term of respect; similar to the Middle English 'duc', 'duk' which denotes a leader, commander, general; from which comes the title 'Duke' and the Old French word 'ducheé' - the territory ruled by a Duke.

Manners are Important!

DOs and DON'Ts (Taboos) in England

Do stand in line:

In England they like to form orderly queues (standing in line) and wait patiently for their turn, e.g. boarding a bus. It is usual to queue when required, and expected that you will take your correct turn and not push in front. "Queue jumping" is frowned upon.

Do take your hat off when you go indoors (men only):

It is impolite for men to wear hats indoors especially in churches. Nowadays, it is becoming more common to see men wearing hats indoors. However, this is still seen as being impolite, especially to the older generations.

  • Do say "Excuse me"
  • Do pay as you go
  • Do say "Please" and "Thank you"
  • Do cover your mouth
  • Do shake hands
  • Do say sorry
  • Do smile

Do not greet people with a kiss:

They only kiss people who are close friends and relatives.

Do not ask a lady her age:

It is considered impolite to ask a lady her age.

  • It is impolite to stare at anyone in public
  • Avoid talking loudly in public
  • Do not pick your nose in public
  • Do not burp in public

As you can see British way of life can be very different from others countries and peoples cultures. Their Customs, their History, their Education, their Etiquette make them a very polite people.

A Bit of Me

Hi!

My name is Pedro Nuno and I`m a nineteen years old person from O`Porto.
I am currently studying to complete the 12th grade at Carolina Michaelis, actually I`m finishing Mathematics but in order to achieve more knowledge, in the area of foreign language, I signed up in english classes.
So... Here I am talking about myself in our english blog.

Firstly I wanted to apologize to all my classmates, teacher and followers of this blog because I`m not very good at English and I can make mistakes in Writing, on the other hand I`m not very good at talking about me but I`ll give my best shot.

I think I am a very simple person with simple tastes and lives a simple life.
I do not like discussions or conflicts.
I like to pursue my dreams, I`m quite a fighter and I never give up my goals.
I think true friendship is what makes every single human being a human.
I believe that wisdom goes beyond religion and faith, not wanting to deny or acknowledge what everyone believes, that`s why I consider myself an open mind.

I love a small group of people in my life... family and closest friends, and I love them with all my heart. They may be few but the love I receive from them is worth a battalion!
One of my greatest passions is my "girl"... my guitar!
joy, sadness, anger, strength, nostalgia, power... all these feelings and attitudes in one word would be music.
Music is a way of life, It`s living close to the edge without fear, It`s art, In the way I see it... It`s my life!

This is as far as I`m willing to go. So...

It was nice to introduce miself!

Cheers!

British Politeness

On this cartoon we can see two situations: on the first one we see a man drowning and another man walking his dog on the path walk. The drowning man is asking for help but the man with the dog doesn't even bother to look at him. On the second one we have the same situation, but, this time, the man with the dog actually helps the other man.

The difference is that this time, the drowning man is polite when he asks for help and that made all the difference. Instead of just shouting for help, he said: "Excuse me, Sir. I'm terribly sorry to bother you, but I wonder if you would mind helping me a moment, as long as it's no trouble, of course.".

This cartoon portrays the British's politenes. Of course that in real life no one would be so polite when drowning; we would just shout "help" like the man in the first situation. But, we have to face it: British are more polite than everybody else. I'm not saying that the ones who aren't British are inferior or less educated, but it's true that they often forget words like "please" and "thank you". On this cartoon being polite makes the difference between life and death. It may be a little extreme, but who knows if it may or may not come true.

So, if you happen to have a son, a daughter, a student who misbehaves and has lack of politeness, or if you just want them to be even more polite or educated than what you taught them to br, send them to England. Undoubtedly, they would thank you. At least, I know I would.

Poem about Poverty

He has so much food on his fridge
That he doesn’t know what to eat.
Some people never that luck meet,
Their hunger makes them jump off a bridge.

The man was fired,
There was no money to pay him.
He’s old, never again will be hired;
His fridge is going slim.

He started to gamble and lost.
His son begs for a toy,
But he doesn’t understand, he’s just a boy;
He doesn’t know how much life costs.

He had nothing to lose,
So he gets on the booze.
Some night he beats up his wife
And destroys their life.

His wife and kid move out.
And she, her body sells.
Then, we hear someone shout
And we can hear the bells.

What happened?
A man died.
He had nothing on his fridge
And he jumped off a bridge.

Do something, don't let poverty become our landscape.
Soon, you will be able to give your former school books to other kids of our school who need them. Do it, take action. Knowing and reading about poverty is not enough, help our community.

English in My Life

I’ve been learning English since the fifth grade and I’ll continue learning it as long as I can.
No one should stop learning this Germanic language because since the 16th century its importance has been increasing. English is everywhere: on TV, radio, newspapers, magazines, leaflets, on the street, and so on. If you like to travel English is the easiest way to communicate, or if you are looking for a job, to speak English is, usually, a requirement.
When I started to learn this language at school I already had the basic skills because I was used to listening to English over and over again on TV. In order to improve my English I am used to watching movies without subtitles, attention to song lyrics, reading an English book like the one that I’m reading at the moment: Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, or even speaking English with my friends. We don’t speak this foreign language on purpose; it comes out so naturally like our mother language.
I enjoy English so much that I want to be a translator; I want to be connected to it eternally. For me, English is not just a language; it’s a way of life, it’s my way to see the world. English was, is and will always be my past, present and future.

Me, myself and I

Hello!
My name is Patrícia Fernandes (a.k.a. Patixita) and I’m a seventeen-year-old student.
I have the privilege of start writing this blog by adding a composition about me! Although I don’t know exactly what to say, I’ll do my very best to you get to know me.
I believe that my friends know me better than I do, but I think that I am very stubborn (and I think they agree on that)! Especially when I’m feeling sad or mad at something or someone, it’s my way or no way! It may be a little extreme but this is me and I’m aware that this is my worst flaw. Sometimes I try to fight this defect but other times I can be a pain in the ass.  As I said it’s my worst flaw which means that is not my only one, I’m also lazy.  Some days I don’t feel like study, others I don’t want to go out. But when I’m feeling really lazy I enjoy not doing anything, I just lie on bed and stay there for infinite times thinking. Thinking about school, thinking about friends, thinking about boys... Just thinking and sometimes wondering what if...  What if I was rich? What if I was smarter? And what if the world ends tomorrow? Regardless, I find no answers to my questions or solutions to my problems.
In spite of these imperfections I also have qualities like being a good friend, a good student and a good daughter. I have many schoolmates and colleagues but I don’t have many friends. They may be little, but I am sure they are good. It takes time to earn my friendship and even more time to earn my love. I don’t just say “you’re my friend” or “I love you” instantly after meeting someone. No, it takes time and effort to build a relation. But I can assure you that after considering someone my friend I’d do anything for him/her. I give major importance to my friends. I go to them when I’m happy, when I’m sad, when I’m mad, when I want to celebrate... They are the engine of my life, without them I’d be nothing. I want my friends to be eternally in high spirits because when they laugh, I laugh with them but when they cry, I cry with them. Unfortunately, my nastiest dissatisfactions were because of my supposed friends. Have you ever felt that you can trust someone and you didn’t even consider it otherwise? Well, I’ve felt that sometimes and have been disappointed after... Sometimes I’m stupid and believe that everyone is a nice person. But I’ve learned the lesson now, I never trust someone completely until they show me they are reliable.
When it’s time to party, I party, but when it’s time to work, I work. I’ve always been very self-conscious about my duties as student, as a daughter, as a friend and as a citizen. I always try to make the world a better place by trying to be ecological. I believe we can change the world with our own two hands. I believe we must act, and fast. Otherwise the world will be chaotic in a few years. And that’s why I’m an online Greenpeace activist and I’ve also dragged my friends and family in to it.
I think I’ve said enough for today! I can’t say everything now, what would I write about tomorrow? Well, stay in touch for new updates!
Kisses*
